This is the second edition of a history of the Ben Line. Alexander and William Thomson set up as shipbrokers in Leith in 1825. In 1847 the company became William Thomson & Co (or Wm Thomson & Co), which is the name of the managing company of The Ben Line Steamers. There is a complete fleet list with extensive illustrations and photographs. A map at the back shows the location of the Scottish mountains and hills whose names begin with "Ben".
