William Denny and Brothers, Shipbuilders, 1844 : Denny and Company, Engineers, 1851

Largely the work of Captain Edward Blackmore, this tells the story of Dumbarton companies William Denny & Brothers (shipbuilders founded in 1844) and Denny & Company (engineers founded in 1851). Denny's can, however, trace its origins back to ships built in Dumbarton by William Denny (born 1779). Denny's also completed work on the Cutty Sark in 1869 after the liquidation of Scott & Linton (the original contractors). The text is illustrated throughout with photographs of the family and other key people in the history of the company, the ships built by the company, their Leven shipyard and the engine works, and of Dumbarton itself. A plan is included of the the shipyard. Details and names of the ships built by the company are included throughout the text. Chapters also highlight the awards scheme for employees, the implementation of workmen's compensation and the building and use of an experimental tank for testing vessels.
