Edwin Lutyens : countryhouses - from the archives of Country Life

Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) was introduced to Country Life founder Edward Hudson by Gertrude Jekyll in 1889. Hudson promoted Lutyens's work and commissioned him to design the magazine's offices in Covent Garden in 1904 as well as three country houses. Country Life subsequently published articles about virtually all his buildings shortly after completion, creating a visual archive which has been used as the source for this work. Included are examples of Lutyens's Surrey vernacular style, early Arts and Crafts and Classical style houses as well as his alterations and extensions to existing buildings. Twenty-two buildings are featured with black and white photographs of each. The introduction outlines Lutyens's life, the architectural context in which he worked and introduces each of the properties included.
