China clipper master : the story of John Smith of the Lahloo
Born in Anstruther, Fife in 1823 John Smith began his seafaring career as a boy on a Greenland whaler. Rising through the ranks he went on to command the Min and Lahloo, tea clippers, and the Maju which sank in bad weather off the Isle of Lewis on her maiden voyage with the loss of all hands. The author also covers the story of Smith's widow and daughters as well as that of Captain Alexander Rodger, the owner of the Min and Lahloo, and Captain John Keay a fellow tea clipper master.
