Heart of oak : letters from Admiral Gardner (1742-

) /edited by Francis Davey.
"Admiral Lord (Alan) Gardner, 1742-1809, was a distinguished naval officer, commander of the Channel Fleet in the war against Napoleon, sometime MP for Plymouth and father of nine children. His surviving 89 letters, recently rediscovered, cover both domestic and family matters as well as the triumphs and tragedies of his long naval career. This book is a paperback of 206 pages with illustrations, family tree, 89 annotated letters mainly from Admiral Alan Gardner to his sister Dolly, facsimile letters in Gardner's own hand, appendices on 'Admiral Gardner's children', 'Robert Barrie' (his nephew), and author's postscript. Three indices of family members, of ships they served on and a general index complete the book."--Provided by the publisher.
