Newspapers, politics, and public opinion in late eighteenth-century England / Hannah Barker.

Voyages of 1817, 1818 and
1820
.
"This is the third and final volume in the set of William Scoresby's journals. It contains the unpublished accounts of his three voyages 1817, 1818 and 1820. [...] In each of the journals, Scoresby wrote detailed descriptions of his landings: on Jan Mayen in 1817, western Spitsbergen in 1818, and the Langanes peninsula in north-east Iceland in 1820. The 1817 voyage, when Scoresby and others found the Greenland Sea relatively free of ice, involved him in the renewed British interest in arctic maritime exploration after the Napoleonic Wars. The Introduction to this volume contains a major reappraisal of Scoresby's role, especially in regard to his alleged mistreatment by John Barrow, Second Secretary of the Admiralty. The volume also contains an appendix by Fred M. Walker on the building of wooden whaleships such as the Baffin that were capable of routine ice navigation under sail as far north as 80ÀN, based on Scoresby's account, as Owners' Representative, at the beginning of the 1820 journal".--Provided by the publisher.

British naval power in the East, 1794-1805 : the command of Admiral Peter Rainier /Peter A. Ward.
"When war broke out with France in 1793, there immediately arose the threat of a renewed French challenge to British supremacy in India. This security problem was compounded in 1795 when the French overran the Netherlands and the extremely valuable Dutch trade routes and Dutch colonies, including the Cape of Good Hope and what is now Indonesia, fell under French control. The task of securing British interests in the East was a formidable one: the distances were huge, communication with London could take years, there were problems marshalling resources, and fine diplomatic skills were needed to keep independent rulers on the British side and to ensure full co-operation from the East India Company. The person charged with overseeing this formidable task was Admiral Peter Rainier (1741-1808), commander of the Royal Navy in the Indian Ocean and the East from 1794 to 1805. This book discusses the enormous difficulties Rainier faced. It outlines his career, explaining how he carried out his role with exceptional skill; how he succeeded in securing British interests in the East - whilst avoiding the need to fight a major battle; how he enhanced Britain's commanding position at sea; and how, additionally, in co-operation with the Governor-General, Richard Wellesley, he further advanced Britain's position in India itself."--Provided by the publisher.

Envisioning empire : the new British world from 1763 to 1773 /edited by Robert A. Olwell and James M. Vaughn
''Examining the pivotal period between the end of the Seven Years' War and the dawn of the American Revolution, Envisioning Empire reinterprets the development of the British Empire in the 18th century. With exceptional geographical scope, this book provides new ways of understanding the actors and events in many imperial arenas, including West Africa, North America, the Caribbean, and South Asia. While 1763 has long been seen as marking a turning point in British and British-colonial history, Envisioning Empire treats this epochal year, and the decade that followed, as constituting a discrete 'moment' in Imperial history that is significant in its own right. Exploring the programs and plans that sought to incorporate the vast new territories and millions of new subjects into the British state and imperial system, it demonstrates how the period between the end of the Seven Years' War and the beginning of the American Revolution was one of contested ideas about the future of British overseas expansion. By examining these competing imperial visions and designs from the perspective of Britain's new subjects as well as from that of British ministers, Envisioning Empire both illuminates and complicates the boundaries that have been drawn between the first and second British empires and reveals how the Empire was being conceived, discussed, and debated during an era of rapid transformation.''--Povided by the publisher.

England's mistress : the infamous life of Emma Hamilton /Kate Williams.
This is a comprehensive biography of Emma Hamilton, Lord Nelson's mistress. It covers her entire life from her birth in 1765 to her death in Calais in 1815, when she was survived by her daughter, Horatia. As a young girl Emma came to London to make her fortune and eventually married Sir William Hamilton, the British Envoy to Naples in 1791. She became a close friend of the Queen of Naples and then Lord Nelson's mistress. The book draws on many letters which were previously undiscovered. There are reproductions of the famous Romney portraits of Emma as well as illustrations by Gilray and Rowlandson lampooning Emma and her relationship with Nelson. There are extensive notes, a bibliography and an index.

War of 1812 / Carl Benn.
"The war of 1812-15 raged across the American frontier, Britain's Canadian colonies, the Atlantic coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and the world's oceans. The conflict saw British, American, and Indigenous forces clash, and in the process, shape the future of North America. Respected historian Dr Carl Benn assesses the reasons why ythe United States took up arms, explores the fighting that followed, and considers the meaning of the war's outcomes. This new and thoroughly revised edition draws on scholarly advances that have occured since original publication in 2002, many of which have changed our perception of the conflict. Fully illustrated in colour with specially commissioned maps and over 50 new images, this book provides an accessible and concise overview of the War of 1812." --

The Royal Navy : birth of a superpower 1793-1800 /Mark Jessop.
"France declared war upon the British in 1793. The burden to conduct a long conflict proved heavy for that island nation. Poverty increased. Liberties and freedoms were sometimes taken away. Thousands of men had to leave their families, and disease, desertion and death meant that many never returned. At first the Royal Navy barely had enough warships to cope, but eight years later she had more than enough. By that time a threat of invasion towards Ireland prompted Parliament to enact a new nation, christened The United Kingdom of Great Britain. As such, 1800 became the final year of the old Kingdom of Great Britain. As she passed away, many of her men and women might have wondered as to what had made her navy a true Neptune. What had assisted the slow birth of a naval 'superpower'? This book seeks to answer that very question."--Provided by the publisher.

Joseph Banks' Florilegium : botanical treasures from Cook's first voyage /with texts by Mel Gooding ; commentaries on the plates by David Mabberley ; and, an afterword by Joe Studholme.
"A full-colour publication of the botanical illustrations commissioned by Joseph Banks, with expert commentaries. Joseph Banks accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage round the world from 1768 to 1771. A gifted and wealthy young naturalist, Banks collected exotic flora from Madeira, Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Java, bringing back over 1,300 species that had never been seen or studied by Europeans. On his return, Banks commissioned over 700 superlative engravings between 1772 and 1784. Known collectively as Banks' Florilegium, they are some of the most precise and exquisite examples of botanical illustration ever created. The Florilegium was never published in Banks' lifetime, and it was not until 1990 that a complete set in colour was issued in a boxed edition (limited to 100 copies) under the direction of the British Museum (Natural History). It is from these prints that the present selection is made, directed by David Mabberley, who has provided expert botanical commentaries, with additional texts by art historian Mel Gooding, setting the works in context as a perfect conjunction of nature, science and art. An afterword by Joseph Studholme describes the history of the modern printing."--Provided by the publisher.
