Perilous fight : America's intrepid war with Britain on the high seas, 1812-1815 /Stephen Budiansky.
"Budiansky shows that, far from an indecisive and unnecessary conflict--as historians have long dismissed the War of 1812--this "forgotten war" had profound consequences that would change the course of naval warfare, America's place in the world, and the rules of international conflict forever. Never again would the great powers challenge the young republic's sovereignty in the aftermath of the stunning performance of America's navy and privateersmen. Drawing extensively on diaries, letters, and personal accounts from both sides, Budiansky re-creates the encounters at sea, the intimate hopes and fears of vainglorious captains and young seamen in search of adventure, and the behind-the-scenes political intrigue and maneuvering in Washington and London."--From publisher description.

De Fluxu et refluxu Maris : de diversis motibus aque maris opiniones /Jacobus de Dondis ; a cura di Aldo Bullo.
"The volume reproduces as accurately as possible the original copy of the manuscript preserved in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan, Italy with a trascription of the fourteenth century text together with Italian and English traslations. Jacopo Dondi, a multi talented engineer, was a doctor in Chioggia from 1313-1344, and in 1355, when he had already moved to Padua, he published a book on tides. It can be surely assumed that Jacopo had already begun work on this treatise while he was a resident of Venice; for as he walked alongside its canal, he was able to benefit from direct experience of the movements of the sea. From these experiences he was able to formulate the laws by which the astronomical positions of the sun and the moon governed the movement of the water."

Harwich lifeboats : an illustrated history /Nicholas Leach.
"Harwich Lifeboat station is one of the busiest in Britain and is just one of the 230 RNLI stations based about Britain's coast. The Harwich lifeboat station is situated at the mouth of the River Stour & Orwell and opposite is Felixstowe the largest commercial port in the UK. Harwich has a lifeboat history dating from 1876 and has been home to the first steam lifeboat Duke of Northumberland in 1890 and in 1996 the first Severn class lifeboat to be stationed in England was at Harwich. Today there are two lifeboats stationed at Harwich - the off-shore Severn class lifeboat Albert Brown and the inshore Atlantic 75 lifeboat Sure and Steadfast. 2002 saw the completion of a new boathouse that provides crew training facilities, houses the in-shore lifeboat, public viewing area and souvenir shop. The two lifeboats cover area from Walton-on-the-Naze to Aldeburgh and 50 miles off-shore, this includes the various different rivers such as the Deben, Ore and Walton-back-waters. Illustrated with over 150 black & white and colour images, the book tells the story of this lifeboat station, as well as the daring rescues the many crews have undertaken."--from publisher.

Of seas and ships and scientists : the remarkable story of the UK's National Institute of Oceanography 1949-1973 /edited by A.S. Laughton ... [et al.].
"This book captures the excitement of a formative phase of UK science during and immediately following WWII. It links back to scientists working at Antarctic whaling stations and the complimentary voyages of Captain Scott's Discovery that explored the vast icy Southern Ocean, funded by a tax on whale oil. In the depths of WWII, a small group of young scientists were brought together under the inspirational leadership of Dr (later Sir) George Deacon, and shortly after the end of the war, the UK's first National Institute of Oceanography was formed. The discoveries from 50 years ago underpin our modern-day science. The book's chapters are all written and edited by NIO scientists and convey the atmosphere of work at sea in a bygone age before small computers, satellite navigation and easy communication."--Back cover.

River Medway pleasure steamers / by Andrew Gladwell.
"Many people remember with great fondness the pleasure steamers that plied the River Thames in the years after the end of the Second World War. The mighty General Steam Navigation Company, more commonly known as 'Eagle Steamers', dominated the business. But fewer people now appreciate the significant role that the New Medway Steam Packet Company (known as 'Queen Line Steamers') played in the growth of services in the Thames Estuary from the early 1920s until the early 1960s. The 'Eagle & Queen Line of Steamers' became one of the most formidable pleasure steamer operators in the whole of the UK before its untimely demise in the 1960s. Andrew Gladwell tells the story of the steamers which operated in the Medway from their inception to the present day, using a selection of images, many previously unpublished, to bring the story to life. Medway Queen herself still survives, but names familiar to Medway residents will include the Queen of Thanet, City of Rochester and Queen of the Channel. Today, Kingswear Castle, Waverley and Balmoral provide steamer services on the Medway, keeping alive an almost two-hundred-year-old tradition."--Provided by the publisher.

Historic ships : the survivors /Paul Brown.
"When we think of our seagoing past, it tends to be about the harbours, docks, and quaysides through which trade passed, or the famous ships such as the Grand Fleet of the Royal Navy, and the great liners that graced the oceans up to the end of the twentieth century. However, our story is expressed as much in the smaller vessels that plied our coasts and rivers as it is through ships such as HMS Victory or SS Great Britain. Most of these smaller vessels are listed in the National Register of Historic Ships and many can be visited or sailed on today. Paul Brown has taken the story of the smaller vessels, which comprise over 90 per cent of the vessels on the register and the accompanying National Archive and Overseas Watch List held by National Historic Ships, and, through this book, paints a picture of the variety and richness of these survivors. The vessels in this book cover all the activities of a thriving maritime society, from workaday ships such as tugs, cargo, fishing and service vessels, through the smaller but vital naval vessels of the Royal Navy and exquisite, elegant steam yachts, to pleasure boats carrying thousands of passengers around our coasts and on our lakes, lochs, canals and rivers."--Provided by the publisher.

The Stroudwater and Thames & Severn canals : from old photographs :volume two /Edwin Cuss & Mike Mills.
"Since the development of photography in the middle of the last century, the picture of our past provided by the written chronicle, the museum artefact or by failing memory has been augmented by the most vivid and immediate relic of former times, the photograph. Authenticating even as it describes, the photograph is of its time in a way that other representations of the past are not. This photographic journey recalls the final years in the life of the two canals, now being restored by the Cotswold Canals Trust, which once linked England's two longest rivers. With the current interest in reviving former railways and the reclamation of their towpaths as quiet refuges from the mayhem of modern living, there is an undeniable fascination in comparing the lively scene to which the camera has in the past been witness to the present. The Stroud and Golden Valleys were traditionally centres of industry and population, the canals in part responsible for their continued prosperity after changing technologies largely relocated the cloth industry to the north of England, and during the heyday of the picture postcard the wharves and locks were still busy places. Comprising the work of both professionals and gifted amateurs, this enchanting collection follows volume one. It will delight and surprise all those who know the canals today, and fascinate anyone with an interest in our industrial heritage."--Provided by the publisher.

Hearts of Oak : the human tragedy of HMS Royal Oak /Dilip Sarkar.
"The story of the sinking of the HMS Royal Oak by German submarine which cost the lives of 833 Royal Navy sailors. HMS Royal Oak was a Revenge-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, infamously torpedoed at anchor by the German submarine U-47 on 14 October 1939. Royal Oak was anchored at Scapa Flow in Orkney, Scotland when she became the first of the five Royal Navy battleships and battle cruisers sunk in the Second World War. The loss of life was heavy: of Royal Oak's complement of 1,234 men and boys, 833 were killed that night or died later of their wounds. The raid made an immediate celebrity and war hero out of the German U-boat commander, Gunther Prien, who became the first submarine officer to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. To the British, the raid demonstrated that the Germans were capable of bringing the naval war to their home waters, and the shock resulted in rapidly arranged changes to dockland security. Now lying upside-down in 30 m of water with her hull 5 m beneath the surface, Royal Oak is a designated war grave."--Provided by the publisher.

An illustrated history of the port of King's Lynn and its railways / Mike G. Fell OBE.
"An informative, personal and graphic portrayal of the Port of King's Lynn from the railway era until the present day. The author spent over forty years in the port transport industry, part of senior management of the east coast ports of King's Lynn, Goole, Hull, Ipswich and Whitby and the Trent wharves of Flixborough and Gunness. It was at King's Lynn that he first held the position of Port Manager, from July 1984 until April 1987. He became passionate about the port's progress both past and, more importantly, during his reign. It was on Mike Fell's watch that the annual cargo throughput over the enclosed dock quays surpassed one million tons for the first time, an achievement shared with a highly enthusiastic and well motivated workforce and the King's Lynn Conservancy Board."--Provided by the publisher.

Ambitious for glory : the career of a Victorian naval officer /Philip Lionel Saumarez ; edited by James Saumarez.
"Thomas Saumarez was in many ways a typical Victorian naval officer - self confident, proud and quick to take offence. In a period of relative peace, he was fortunate to achieve distinction through active service in the Argentine, the West African Station and the Second Chinese Opium War, reaching post rank at an early age but retiring shortly after this following discord with his superior officer. By good fortune he left his 'Private and Public Journal', and through this and other original correspondence his grandson and great-grandson have been able to piece together his service life to produce this book, consisting largely of direct transcription of Thomas's writing. This period was one of great change, with sail to steam and wood to iron, and the book provides an important record of the ships and actions during 'Pax Britannica'. Perhaps more importantly it also gives a fascinating insight into the mores and opinions of an officer of that age, who is revealingly frank in his judgement of those with whom he served." - Provided by the publisher
