1945 : the second world war at sea in photographs.
"The final year of the Second World War was very quiet in terms of naval operations, as European leaders turned their minds towards peace with the promise of unconditional German surrender. From January to May in Europe, the German navy was involved in a large-scale evacuation of refugees, but the Soviet submarines were working very effectively at this time, so German losses remained high. The majority of the fighting at sea took place in the Pacific, and from April to June, the Allies were fighting in the Battle of Okinawa, the largest amphibious assault in the Second World War Pacific theatre. The Americans used Okinawa as their base to attack mainland Japan, and over 70,000 Japanese soldiers died. The last actions of the Battle of the Atlantic took place in May, and the German U-boat fleet surrendered en masse in the same month. This is the last in a series of year-by-year books covering the major naval events of the Second World War."--Provided by the publisher.

Rosyth dockyard & naval base through time / Walter Burt.
"With the coming of the naval arms race with Germany, in 1903 the Admiralty decided to establish a naval base and dockyard at Rosyth, taking advantage of deep tidal water there. Construction work started in 1909 and the dockyard was finished in 1916, when the pre-Dreadnought HMS Zealandia entered dry dock there. The yard closed in 1925, reopening in 1938 when relations with Germany began to deteriorate again and serving throughout the Second World War. During the Cold War, Rosyth was used to refit conventional and Polaris nuclear-armed submarines as well as other warships. In 1997 Rosyth was acquired by Babcock International, becoming the first privatised naval dockyard in Britain, and is now the site where the Royal Navy?s two new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers are being assembled. In this book, published in the dockyard?s centennial year, Walter Burt takes us through the history of Rosyth dockyard and naval base."--Provided by the publisher.

Steel and Ice The U-boat Battle in the Arctic and Black Sea 1941-1945.
"As the land war raged along the Eastern Front between 1941 and 1945, an equally fierce and unrelenting war ensued on the seas. From German Wolf Pack attacks on Russian convoy traffic and military vessels to close-quarter combat undertaken by small U-boats transported by land and river to the Black Sea, the Kriegsmarine wrestled for control of the seas fringing an embattled Soviet Union. Combined with the fortitude of U-boat crews who fought in some of the harshest weather conditions found at sea, ingenuity on behalf of German military engineers also facilitated the transfer of U-boats from Germany to Romania. From there, the Kriegsmarine engaged Soviet military might and pioneered the use of submarine-based rocket firing technology against land targets. The struggle between the Kriegsmarine's U-boats and the Red Navy lasted from the opening salvos of Operation Barbarossa to the final chaotic days of Germany's defeat." --Provided by the publisher.

Great Yacht Designs by Alfred Mylne 1921 to 1945 / Ian Nicolson
"Alfred Mylne the First designed exciting, beautiful yachts, which have won many races over the past 120 years - some are still collecting prizes. They have also cruised far and wide. Many still traverse the oceans, braving the blasting breeze with the confidence of their strong construction. Each chapter of this book is about one of these famous craft, or about a class of boats. The text reveals what is so special about each design. With a fascinating set of illustrations from the Mylne archives, each boat is accompanied by reproductions of Mylne's original plans and drawings. This is the second book about Alfred Mylne the First's very special designs, being a sequel to Ian Nicolson's recent Alfred Mylne The Leading Yacht Designer: 1896-1920. Writing with expertise and enthusiasm, the author has worked in the yacht industry for seventy-one years, including twenty years with Alfred Mylne the Second."--Provided by the publisher.

Jutland 1916 : twelve hours to win the war /Angus Konstam.
"Using a narrative approach, Jutland 1916: Twelve Hours that Decided the War tells the story of the Battle of Jutland, the greatest naval clash of the First World War. Drawing on a wealth of first-hand accounts, some of which were previously unknown, it weaves a highly original narrative, which intertwines original research, into a fast-paced account of the fighting. This is the only book on the battle to use a narrative thread to tell the story from both the British and German perspectives and will provide a fresh perspective on this decisive battle."--Provided by the publisher.

Essential essays / Stuart Hall ; edited by David Morley.
"From his arrival in Britain in the 1950s and involvement in the New Left, to founding the field of cultural studies and examining race and identity in the 1990s and early 2000s, Stuart Hall has been central to shaping many of the cultural and political debates of our time. Essential Essays - a landmark two volume set - brings together Stuart Hall's most influential and foundational works. Spanning the whole of his career, these volumes reflect the breadth and depth of his intellectual and political projects while demonstrating their continued vitality and importance. Volume 1: Foundations of Cultural Studies focuses on the first half of Hall's career, when he wrestled with questions of culture, class, representation, and politics. This volume's stand-out essays include his field-defining 'Cultural Studies and Its Theoretical Legacies;' the prescient 'The Great Moving Right Show,' which first identified the emergent mode of authoritarian populism in British politics; and 'Encoding and Decoding in the Television Discourse,' one of his most influential pieces of media criticism. As a whole, Volume 1 provides a panoramic view of Hall's fundamental contributions to cultural studies. Volume 2: Identity and Diaspora draws from Hall's later essays, in which he investigated questions of colonialism, empire, and race. It opens with 'Gramsci's Relevance for the Study of Race and Ethnicity,' which frames the volume and finds Hall rethinking received notions of racial essentialism. In addition to essays on multiculturalism and globalization, black popular culture, and Western modernity's racial underpinnings, Volume 2 contains three interviews with Hall, in which he reflects on his life to theorize his identity as a colonial and diasporic subject."--Provided by the publisher.
