In 1969 Elders & Fyffes were acquired by Fruit Importers of Ireland Ltd (a company formed out of the merger of United Fruit Importers, Torney Brothers & McCann and Connolly Shaw) and their name was changed to Fyffes Group Ltd. Battle of jutland.
"Since the days of the Battle of Trafalgar, the Royal Navy had been the acknowledged as the most powerful maritime force on the planet. Britain could boast more warships, and particularly more Dreadnoughts and battle-cruisers than any other nation. But the Germans had undertaken an enormously-expensive ship-building programme designed to place the Kaiserliche Marine on an equal footing with the Royal Navy. Since the outbreak of war between the two nations in 1914, the British public had waited in eager anticipation for the moment when the opposing battlefleets would meet at sea. After a number of smaller engagements, major elements of the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas Fleet, finally faced each other across the grey seas of the North Sea off Jutland. Instead of the great victory that the British expected, the result was disappointingly inconclusive, with the Grand Fleet losing more men and more ships than the Germans. In this inciteful and unique investigation into the battle, naval historian Richard Osborne draws on the words of the key players to resolve the many disputes, controversies and myths that have surrounded this battle throughout the intervening 100 years." --Provided by the publisher.

Astronomy and astrology in the Islamic world / Stephen P. Blake.
"Surveys the contributions of Islamic astronomers and mathematicians to the development of astronomy and astrology. It was the astronomers and mathematicians of the Islamic world who provided the theories and concepts that paved the way from the geocentric theories of Claudius Ptolemy in the second century AD to the heliocentric breakthroughs of Nicholas Copernicus and Johannes Kepler in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Algebra, the Arabic numeral system, and trigonometry: all these and more originated in the Muslim East and undergirded an increasingly accurate and sophisticated understanding of the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets. This nontechnical overview of the Islamic advances in the heavenly sciences allows the general reader to appreciate (for the first time) the absolutely crucial role that Muslim scientists played in the overall development of astronomy and astrology in the Eurasian world."--Provided by the publisher.

Light in the darkness : a history of lightships and the people who served on them /Liam Clarke.
"Light in the Darkness examines the origins of the lightship service, the obstacles and prejudices that faced originators of the idea and the subsequent development of the vessels and working practices over the years. Throughout the centuries, this dangerous occupation has claimed the lives of a number of lightship crews and those who tried to save them. The lives and working conditions of the brave men, who for over 260 years put their lives at risk guiding ships safely to their destinations, has been almost forgotten. Who were these brave men? Why did they do this vital work? Where did they live and what was the effect upon local communities when these tragedies occurred? Dr Liam Clarke answers these questions with a discussion of local lightship disasters including interviews with some of those who once served. The author, born into a family with a long history of lightship service, has a deep understanding of the dangerous working conditions and the pressures that this lifestyle had on the men and their families. He uses this to portray a lonely and hazardous life which few now remember, and which has rarely been written about." --Provided by the publisher.

British paddlesteamers : The heyday of excursions and day trips /John Megoran
"For a hundred years excursion paddle steamers gave all the social classes the opportunity to enjoy a cruise on the briny from ports, resorts and piers around the UK. For the most part, everything usually went well on these trips; however, sometimes it did not, and this book chronicles tales of the difficulties and pressures faced both behind the scenes and in plain view. What happened when a paddle steamer broke down or was caught out in a dense fog? Why did they need special riding posts in particular ports? Who were some of the captains, and how did they manage to keep their ships and their passengers safe in an age before radar and satellite navigation? What made people get angry and crews embark on fisticuffs? What were the problems posed by some routes? Why was a paddle steamer banned and how did someone end up in court? These selected tales from the heyday of the excursion paddle steamers in the UK give a little flavour of what it was like to be there at the time, while period images of the people and the ships provide fascinating illustrations to their individual stories."--Provided by the publisher.

Tracing your seafaring ancestors : a guide to maritime photographs for family historians /Simon Wills.
Photographs of your seafaring ancestors may tell you more about their lives than you realize, and Simon Wills's helpful and practical guide shows you how to identify and interpret the evidence caught on camera. Since maritime roles have been so vital to Britain's prosperity and military might, they are among the commonest professions depicted in photographs of our ancestors, and his handbook is the ideal introduction to them. Maybe your ancestor was a seaman in the Royal Navy, a ship's captain, a steward on an ocean liner, or an officer in the naval reserves? This book shows you how to spot photographic clues to an individual's career. Whether your ancestor served in the merchant navy or the Royal Navy or in another seagoing role such as a fisherman, a lifeboatman, or even a ship's passenger, Simon Wills's book will be your guide.

RMS Titanic : the wider story /Patrick Mylon.
"What more can be said about the ill-fated RMS Titanic, a ship that has achieved almost mythological status throughout the world? In truth, not a lot. But what about her sister ship, the railway stations and the boat trains that served her, the vessels that sent ice warnings and those that responded to her distress calls? Here Patrick Mylon explores many of the lesser-known aspects of Titanic's legacy, telling the wider story that developed around the disaster. Using rare and previously unpublished images from his collection of White Star memorabilia, he places fresh emphasis on the vessels, events and locations Titanic encountered during her short life."--Provided by publisher.

The intimate universe : how the stars are closer than you think /Marek Kukula.
POPULAR ASTRONOMY & SPACE. The scale of the cosmos can be baffling, with distances so vast and timescales to long that it's easy to dismiss them as being completely divorced from our everyday life. But in this new book Dr Marek Kukula, Public Astronomer at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, shows you the myriad ways we are intrinsically connected to the rest of the universe and how everything on Earth - from the ground beneath our feet to the technology in our pockets - has origins in space. Discover how rocks from space reveal what conditions are like at our planet's core, how the desolate surface of the moon holds ancient clues to Earth's earliest life forms, and how buried treasure in the Nile reveals the watery past of Mars.

Malaya and Singapore 1941-42 : the fall of Britain's empire in the East /Mark Stille
"For the British Empire it was a military disaster, but for Imperial Japan the conquest of Malaya was one of the pivotal campaigns of World War II. Giving birth to the myth of the Imperial Japanese Army's invincibility, the victory left both Burma and India open to invasion. Although heavily outnumbered, the Japanese Army fought fiercely to overcome the inept and shambolic defence offered by the British and Commonwealth forces. Detailed analysis of the conflict, combined with a heavy focus on the significance of the aerial campaign, help tell the fascinating story of the Japanese victory, from the initial landings in Thailand and Malaya through to the destruction of the Royal Navy's Force Z and the final fall of Singapore itself."--Provided by the publisher.

Skagerrak : the Battle of Jutland through German eyes /Gary Staff.
"In January 1916 Vizeadmiral Scheer took command of the High Sea Fleet. This aggressive and pugnacious leader embarked upon a vigorous offensive program which culminated in the greatest clash between dreadnought capital ships the world had seen. Although outnumbered almost two to one, Vizeadmiral Scheer conducted a provocative operation on 31 May 1916. Who would prevail: the massive preponderance of British heavy calibre cannon, or the aggressive tactics of the street fighter Scheer? Manning the ships of both sides were the technically skilled and talented seamen who were prepared to carry out their duties loyally and courageously until the very end. Over 8,500 men perished in less than 10 hours of fighting, a horrendous loss, even by World War One standards. This book gives voice to many of the German Navy participants, from a German perspective, on this tumultuous battle fought over 100 years ago. These men gave their all and are gone now, but not forgotten."--Provided by the publisher.

River Plate 1939 : the sinking of the Graf Spee /Angus Konstam
"Days before the outbreak of World War II a handful of German commerce raiders put out to sea to prey on Allied merchantmen. Amongst them was the Panzerschiff ('armoured ship') Graf Spee, a formidable warship that boasted the firepower of a battleship but the size, speed and range of a cruiser. When World War II commenced, under the command of Captain Langsdorff the Graf Spee began a hunting spree across the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean that eventual took her to the River Plate in search of her next victim - an Allied convoy. Instead she found three Royal Navy cruisers under the command of Commodore Harwood, eager to put an end to the 'pocket battleship' that had been terrorizing Allied merchant ships. Featuring full colour artwork, archive photographs and meticulous research, this comprehensive volume explores the thrilling story behind the Battle of the River Plate, an engagement that unquestionably demonstrated the effectiveness of British seapower and diplomacy on an international stage."--Provided by the publisher.

Making waves : a history of the Royal Yacht Squadron 1815-2015 /Alex Martin
"Founded in 1815, the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) is widely regarded as the most prestigious yacht club in the world. Its clubhouse, Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight, UK, was built by Henry VIII in 1539. It overlooks the waters of the Solent and the start line of many celebrated yacht races. Since 1826 the RYS has held an annual regatta, which became known as Cowes Week. Its association with the Royal Navy began early and Nelson's captain at Trafalgar, Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, headed the long list of distinguished naval members. Today its 600 members all have an active interest in promoting yachting in all its forms, from cadet training to the America's Cup. The club's patron is Queen Elizabeth II and the club's admiral is Prince Philip. In 2015, the Royal Yacht Squadron celebrated its bicentenary. The anniversary book, Making Waves: The 200 Year History of the Royal Yacht Squadron, by the historian Alex Martin and with a foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, is being published to mark this celebration."--Provided by the publisher.

U-Boats in the Bahamas / Eric Wiberg.
"This book tells one more key part of the big story and is one more piece in the giant puzzle of the history of World War II. Its value for historians cannot be underestimated.Throughout the stories of the attacks by German and Italian submarines on Allied shipping in the water around the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos, several consistent themes emerge in Wiberg's thorough accounts. Prime among them is the heroism of the merchant mariners who time and again put themselves in danger as they performed the critical task of moving supplies, military and civilian, which were vital to ultimate victory."--Provided by the publisher.

Gone to the continent : the British in Calais, 1760-1860 /Martin Brayne.
"Today Calais is associated in minds of most British people with refugees seeking entry into the U.K. But for a hundred years between 1760 and 1860 many were travelling in the opposite direction. Calais was not only a place of refuge for runaway lovers, debtors and other law-breakers, it was a stopping-off point for Grand Tourists, a resort for holidaymakers, a place of employment and an attractive location for artists and writers. For many it was their first experience of 'the shock of abroad'."--Provided by the publisher.
