Bound for Australia: the loss of the emigrant
ship
TAYLEUR at Lambay on the coast of Ireland.
The White Star Line merchant sailing ship Tayleur was lost, just north of Dublin, on 21 January 1854. On her maiden voyage, the ship was carrying emigrants, many of whom were skilled tradesmen, to Australia driven by the gold rush at Ballarat. Of the 650 on board only 290 survived. Using many contemporary original sources, the loss of the ship has been attributed to a small crew, compass innaccuracy, a storm and being an untried ship. The wreck was forgotten until 1957 when divers from the Irish Sub Aqua Club relocated the remains. It is now a site frequently visited by scuba divers. Included as appendices are crew and passenger lists, a glossary of nautical terms, a sail plan and the points of the compass; also a Chronology of events and photographs of artefacts.

RMS St Helena: Royal Mail
ship
extraordinary/John Bryant
"The final voyage of the RMS St Helena from the UK began from Tilbury on 14th June 2016 bound for Ascension Island, St Helena and then on to Cape Town. Little did they know at the time that in a sudden change of plan the ship was to remain in service in the South Atlantic for another 12 months owing to on-going safety issues at the new international airport. The book gives an insight into how the remoteness of the territories in the South Atlantic governs people's lives. Up to now for St Helena everything and everyone has had to come in and out by sea. It wasn't until comparatively recently in 1978 that a dedicated shipping service to serve them actually came into being. It tells the story of the St Helena Shipping Line and of this unique vessel and its predecessor, both affectionately known as the 'RMS', which have faithfully served these communities for nearly 40 years."--Provided by the publisher.

Ship
beneath the ice : the discovery of Shackleton's Endurance /Mensun Bound.
"On 21 November 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, Endurance, finally succumbed to the crushing ice. Its crew watched in silence as the stern rose twenty feet in the air, and then it was gone. The miraculous escape and survival of all twenty-eight men on board have entered legend. And yet, the iconic ship that bore them to the brink of the Antarctic was considered forever lost. A century later, an audacious plan to locate the ship was hatched. The Ship Beneath the Ice gives a blow-by-blow account of the two epic expeditions to find the Endurance. As with Shackleton's own story, the voyages were filled with intense drama and teamwork under pressure. In March 2022, the Endurance was finally found to headlines all over the world. Written by Mensun Bound, the Director of Exploration on both expeditions, this captivating narrative includes countless fascinating stories of Shackleton and his legendary ship. Complete with a selection of Frank Hurley's photos from Shackleton's original voyage in 1914-17, as well as from the expeditions in 2019 and 2022, The Ship Beneath the Ice is the perfect tribute to this monumental discovery."--Provided by the publisher.

A history of
ship
launches and their ceremonies / George Hodgkinson.
"Throughout history, man has been performing rituals at the launch of a new ship to seek supernatural or divine protection for his ship and those who will sail in her. The form of the ritual varies according to local custom and religion: from the breaking of a coconut, to the release of doves, to the role of astrologers in choosing an auspicious day for the launch. But the sentiment that lies behind all launching ceremonies is fear. At the moment of launching a new ship a seafarer is alert to any sign that his ship is not sound. He is superstitious and seeks reassurance that his ship and those who will sail in her will be protected. The rites of blood sacrifice and libations performed by the ancient Babylonians and Greeks are well evidenced. The evolution of this practice into today's tradition of breaking a bottle of wine against the bow of a ship before launch, still symbolising sacrifice, is explored as well as the now widely practised custom of inviting ladies to name and launch new ships."--Provided by the publisher.

The burning of the Sarah Sands / Roger Willoughby and Alan Coles
"The fire aboard the troopship Sarah Sands was an epic story of gallantry that transfixed Victorian Britain. When the ship carrying men of the 54th Regiment to India in 1857 to help quell the Mutiny caught fire in the middle of the ocean with no means of summoning help, those aboard had to deal with the potential disaster themselves. Showing extraordinary courage and discipline, they put out the fire without loss of life and successfully nursed the damaged ship 800 miles to Mauritius. The authors not only tell the story of the fire and of the individuals involved - some heroic, some less so - in this well-illustrated book but have also compiled much medallic information. There is a roll of Indian Mutiny Medals to men aboard, a section on lifesaving awards for the incident, a detailed look at why no Victoria Cross was granted and a list of extant medals."--Provided by the publisher.

The 24-gun frigate Pandora / John McKay & Ron Coleman.
The Pandora was a 24-gun Sixth Rate built at Deptford in 1779, best known for her voyage to Tahiti to bring back the mutineers of the Bounty. She was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef on her return journey in 1791. The wreck was discovered in 1977. This book outlines the design and building of the ship, her career and aspects of the excavation of the wreck site. There are photographs of a model of the ship and relics from the excavation. There are more than 300 drawings covering every detail of the ship. Admiralty draughts held by the National Maritime Museum Greenwich form the basis of the hull drawings. The book jacket shows the Pandora's colour scheme and decoration. This is a revised edition of the 1992 book and includes a 1/128 scale fold out plan with keys to rigging drawings.

Conspiracies at sea : Titanic and Lusitania /J. Kent Layton.
"Great disasters always attract conspiracy theories and this is just as true of disasters at sea as it is of those on land or in the air. The sinkings of the Titanic and the Lusitania, two of the great maritime disasters of the twentieth century, have attracted more than their share of these theories. Was the sinking of the Titanic a plot by J. P. Morgan to remove opponents to his plan to create a US Federal Reserve Bank? Was the construction of the ship substandard? Was the ship that hit the iceberg that night even the Titanic at all? Might it not have been her sister Olympic instead? And was the Lusitania deliberately allowed to sail into harm's way to provoke the US into joining the First World War? Was her name obscured so the U-boat captain did not know what ship he was firing on? And how much ammunition was she carrying aboard? In this book, maritime historian and ocean liner expert J. Kent Layton examines these and more conspiracy theories and helps lay them to rest."--Provided by the publisher.
