Barbary pirate : the life and crimes of John Ward : the most infamous privateer of his time /Greg Bak.
This book is the story of the life of John Ward, who was born in about 1553. He came from a humble background but rose to become the most infamous, brutal and successful privateer of his time. He was a sailor in James I's of England (James VI of Scoland's) navy when, in 1603, he stole a civilian vessel and went to Tunis, an outpost of the Ottoman empire, where he set himelf up as a privateer under the Pasha's protection. Ward's use of seafaring tactics enabled the Barbary Corsairs of Ottoman North Africa to regroup and rejuvenate. His activities made him extremely wealthy, allowing him to purchase a mansion in Tunis where he maintained a mock court and behaved like a king. Ward came to be regarded as a threat to Christendom and was pursued by pirate hunters across the Mediterranean. By 1622 he was reported dead from the plague. This book has a series of black and white illustrations comprising contemporary maps and prints.

Pacific : an ocean of wonders/Philip Hatfield
"The pacific Ocean covers very nearly a third of the surface of the globe, and is inhabited by a diverse array of peoples and cultures bound by a common thread: their relationship with the sea. This visually stunning book highlights the importance of the Pacific, uncovering stories of beachcombers, piracy surfing, castaways, mutineers, nuclear weapons test and kaiju monster movies. The rich history of this vast ocean is explored through an intriguing collection of objects, each one beautifully illustrated, from the earliest human engagement with the Pacific through to the modern day. Covering topics as diverse as mapping, whaling, trade and the myriad of vessels used to traverse the ocean, Pacific, tells a broad history that extends to current political tensions and the environmental dangers that threaten these islands' existence."--Provided by the publisher.

Britain's defence dilemma : an inside view : rethinking British defence policy in the post-imperial era
This book provides an account of Britain's post-imperial defence policies and its shifting alliances. It gives an inside view of the process which decides best defence practice and sets out the problems facing policy makers. The author suggests that between 1956 and 1970 Great Britain was an offshore island of the USA and then from 1970-1988 it was an offshore island of Europe. He finishes by proposing that Britain may become a Venice for the 21st century, a nation that is tied to Europe but also has alliances elsewhere. Contains a bibliography and extensive index.

The Two Battles of Copenhagen 1801 and 1807 : Britain and Denmark in the Napoleonic Wars /Gareth Glover.
"The Danish capital of Copenhagen was the site of two major battles during the Napoleonic Wars, but the significance of the fighting there, and the key role the country played in the conflict in northern Europe, has rarely been examined in detail. In this absorbing and original study Gareth Glover focuses on these two principal events, using original source material to describe them from the British and Danish perspectives, and he shows how they fitted into the little-understood politics of this region during this turbulent phase of European history. The first Battle of Copenhagen in 1801 - the naval battle celebrated in Britain as one of Nelson's great victories - and the second - the British army-s assault on the city in 1807 in which Wellington played a prominent part - were episodes in the continental struggle to resist the power of the French. Gareth Glover describes these events in vivid detail, quoting extensively from the recollections of eyewitnesses on both sides. His account is fascinating reading and an important contribution to the history of the period."--Provided by the publisher.

Cardiff's vanished docklands / Brian Lee.
"Before the Industrial Revolution Cardiff was a sleepy little town on the South Wales coast. That was until mules started arriving laden with coal from the Welsh valleys. The Industrial Revolution took hold, the coal and iron trade took off and a vast complex of docks spread rapidly around the town's natural harbour. The Glamorganshire Canal was built to transport the iron and coal, the railway arrived, and by the late nineteenth century Cardiff had become the largest coal-exporting port in the world. Ships sailed in and out of the harbour from all over the globe. Large numbers of migrant workers were attracted to the area creating the vibrant multi-national community of Butetown. But the decline in the coal and iron industries after the Second World War sounded the death knell for Cardiff's Docklands. By the 1960s Tiger Bay had become a scene of dereliction and with a final sweep of the bulldozers a whole way of life disappeared. Brian Lee tells the fascinating story of this exciting period in Cardiff's history, illustrated with his selection of more than 200 remarkable photographs which capture the spirit of the era: huge new docks opening, cargoes swinging from ship to shore, warehouses filled to overflowing, streets and pubs a flurry of activity, royal visits and carnivals, and a multitude of different vessels."--Provided y the publisher.

The last days of the High Seas Fleet : from mutiny to Scapa Flow /Nicholas C. Jellicoe.
"On 21 June 1919 the ships of the German High Seas Fleet - interned at Scapa Flow since the Armistice - began to founder, taking their British custodians completely by surprise. In breach of agreed terms, the fleet dramatically scuttled itself, in a well-planned operation that consigned nearly half a million tons, and 54 of 72 ships, to the bottom of the sheltered anchorage in a gesture of Wagnerian proportions. This much is well-known, but even a century after the 'Grand Scuttle' many questions remain. Was von Reuter, the fleet's commander, acting under orders or was it his own initiative? Why was 21 June chosen? Did the British connive in, or even encourage the action? Could more have been done to save the ships? Was it legally justified? And what were the international ramifications? This new book analyses all these issues, beginning with the fleet mutiny in the last months of the War that precipitated a social revolution in Germany and the eventual collapse of the will to fight. The Armistice terms imposed the humiliation of virtual surrender on the High Seas Fleet, and the conditions under which it was interned are described in detail. Meanwhile the victorious Allies wrangled over the fate of the ships, an issue that threatened the whole peace process. Using much new material from German sources and a host of eye-witness testimonies, the circumstances of the scuttling itself are meticulously reconstructed, while the aftermath for all parties is clearly laid out. The story concludes with 'the biggest salvage operation in history' and a chapter on the significance of the scuttling to the post-war balance of naval power. Published to coincide with the centenary, this book is an important reassessment of the last great action of the First World War."--Provided by the publisher

The Japanese Navy in World War II : In the words of former Japanese naval officers /edited by David C. Evans
"First published in 1986 and lauded by historians and World War II buffs eager for the Japanese viewpoint, this collection of essays makes significant contributions to the field of World War II literature. In it, top-ranking Japanese officers offer their personal perspectives of the Pacific War. This second edition adds five articles to the original twelve to present a full picture of the Japanese navy's role in the war. Most of these moving accounts were written in the 1950s and retain the immediacy felt by the writers when they participated in the events. First published in 1986 and lauded by historians and World War II buffs eager for the Japanese viewpoint, this collection of essays makes significant contributions to the field of World War II literature. They provide valuable information on the strategy, tactics, and operations of the Japanese fleet, as well as insights into the personalities and motives of its leaders. Here, Vice Admiral Shigeru Fukudome comes to grips with allegations that the assault on Pearl Harbor represented strategic folly, political blundering, and tactical stupidity. Captain Mitsuo Fuchida describes how his bombing group unleashed 'devils of doom' on Battleship Row, and Mitsuru Yoshida gives an eye-witness account of the sinking of the famous battleship Yamato. The new contributions to the volume discuss operations in the Indian Ocean, the battle of the Philippine Sea, the protection of merchant shipping, submarine warfare, and Japan's overall naval strategy."--Provided by the publisher.

Holland America cruise ships
"The Holland America Line was founded in 1873 and operated a fleet of passenger and cargo vessels from the Netherlands to the east and west coasts of America. The company later acquired the stock of the Europa-Canada Line and in 1964 became involved with the Swedish America Line, Axel Johnson and Wallenius Rederiana to form the Atlantic Container Line. In 1988 the company was purchased by the Carnival Cruise Line and the name was retained, continuing the history of this line. The company currently operate five different classes of ships, the smaller and older 'S' class vessels; the mid-range 'R' class; the 'Vista' class; the newest and largest 'Signature' class; and the smaller 'Prinsendam'. Koningsdam, delivered on 31 March 2016, is the largest vessel designed and built for the Holland America Line, with a beam of 35 metres, and complies with the new Panamax dimensions, which enable it to cruise through the wider locks in the Panama Canal. Utilising many rare and unpublished images, Ian Collard offers a lavishly illustrated look at the cruise ships operated by the Holland America Line. Included here are images of the ships in many guises and liveries as the author offers an array of superb photographs of these iconic vessels."--Provided by the publisher
