P34464; Stern views of three sampans close to landing steps at Shanghai. The sampans all have shelters amidships. The bow of the Ocean Steamship Company 63 feet steam tender Erebus (1907) is alongside the landing steps. She was built at Shanghai as the Velin, was purchased and renamed in 1912 and survived in service until about 1954

P34282; The officers and men of 824 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm in a formal group in front of one of their Fairey Swordfish I torpedo bomber reconnaissance biplane aircraft on Seletar airfield, Singapore. There are 62 officers and men and they are in their No. 1 uniforms but excluding head dress. 824 Squadron disembarked to Seletar from the aircraft carrier Eagle (1918) on four occasions in 1938; 14 to 31 January, 5 to 26 February, 9 to 16 March and 17 to 27 September.

She has an open stern and her large rudder board is angled to port. A flat roofed building with balconies is on the right. The photographer is looking aft from the forward end of the waist showing the anchor bitts in the foreground with a capstan between them and the mainmast. The mainsail is stowed fore and aft. Washing is hanging from a bamboo pole across the starboard side of the waist. The sliding doors to the chart house and the accommodation are open. Negative number P34446 is also of this vessel.

The photographer is looking forward from the poop showing crew members splitting bamboo canes, presumably to make baskets for the fish catch. A number of baskets are on deck. The fishing net windlass is in the background. A large awning is spread above the waist. Carriage mounted muzzle loading cannon are on either side of the poop in the foreground.

The photographer is on the port side of the hold looking forward and to starboard showing the decked forecastle fitted with two windlasses and a central bitt. The vessel has a bowsprit with a timber platform under it. The base of the mainmast is on the right with all of the mast hoops gathered at the foot.

A capstan is fitted on the centreline of the poop and the mainmast is stepped ahead of it. awnings are rigged over the poop and the waist. A slatted seat is against the port side of the poop.

The photographer's ship was at Weihaiwei on five occasions; 3 June to 21 July 1937, 14 to 17 August 1937, 6 September to 7 October 1937, 8 June to 12 August 1938 and 20 August to 4 September 1938.
