HMS Opal presented by Cdr L.B. Denham of Hove Sussex. This Corvette was 'senior officer' at Esquimalt in 1877 during the Russian war scare, and lay prepared for action, side by side with a Russian Cruiser of superior strength at Esquimalt the cable being broken down 3 or 4 other Russians were in San Francisco. Great exitement prevailed at Esquimalt, and fortifications were at once undertaken. (Drawing)
