Charles II's visit to the 'Tiger' at Woolwich, 17 August 1681

A lee bow view of the ‘Tiger’ with the royal standard at the main, close-hauled on the starboard tack, passing to the windward side of a smaller ship which is seen on the broadside firing a salute. A yacht is shown on the left.

The drawing is numbered ‘60’, altered from ‘67’.

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder.

Van de Velde made a large series of drawings of the royal visit to the ‘Tiger’ and the subsequent passage down the Thames to Sheerness and Chatham.
