Canal and Bridge of SS Apostoli, Venice

A view down a canal in Venice which is crowded with boats. Buildings tower over the canal, and a bridge arches across the centre of the etching. Men working throughout create a feeling of movement. The crowding of the image provides a sense of the industry at work on the canals. The tower on the right is the Campo Santi Apostoli. Signed by the artist.

Born in Glasgow, Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) was a prominent London based printmaker and an official war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. Bone began practicing printmaking in the 1890s and moved to London in 1901.
