Hour-glass
This hour-glass was recovered from the wreck of HMS 'Stirling Castle', a 70-gun ship which went aground on the Goodwin Sands in the Great Storm of 1703. The bulbs are made from greenish glass with turned lips and a pronounced 'dimple' at the base. One bulb is chipped and the sand is missing; so is the diaphragm, which controlled the flow of sand between the bulbs, and the binding for the joint. The glass is in a wooden stand is made from two circular bases with rough-turned ornamental rings, and five rectangular supports.
