Astronomical compendium

Astronomical compendium for latitudes 37°-53° North. This compendium consists of a lunar volvelle, a volvelle for converting common hours to Italian hours, a horizontal dial, a compass, a table of latitudes and a wind-ring. The lid and the base hinge out from the main part of the instrument at opposite ends. Outside of the lid is a lunar volvelle with a fixed disc and a rotatable disc. Inside the lid is a volvelle, made for a latitude of 49° North (that of Nuremberg or Paris), for showing the time of sunset. It also doubles as a means of converting between common hours and Italian hours. In the centre of the instrument, the horizontal dial and the compass are missing. On the inside of the base is a table of latitudes in two columns for places in Europe. On the outside is a windrose with the cardinal points marked in Latin; 16 other points named in German; and eight winds named in Italian.

Although the dial and compass are missing, it is clear from the markings on the centre of the instrument that the dial would have consisted of a horizontal plate, pivoted along a central East-West line so that it could be set for different latitudes. Stamped around the sides of the instrument is the signature: 'VDALRICV KLIEBER AVGVSTE FACIFBAT ANNO 15 69'. A similar instrument, dated 1570, also missing its dial-plate, is in the Mensing Collection, now in the Adler Planetarium, Chicago (inventory no. M-248).

For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
