Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 10°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The compass has cardinal points marked by French initials and the remainder of the compass plate is engraved with a four-point leaf motif. There is no mark for magnetic variation and the needle, with an open circle indicating North, is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. The compass is surrounded by an engraved garland of fruit, flowers and leaves. The hour ring is octagonal and its obverse side is numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII (enamelled in black), while its inner rim is divided 4 am-8 pm to the hour. There is no table of latitudes and the reverse side is plain.

This dial is probably a fairly modern version of an Augsburg dial, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. Unlike most standard Augsburg dials, this one has no table of latitudes.

For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
