Vertical disc dial

Vertical disc dial and perpetual calendar for latitude 47° North. This dial comprises a circular brass disc with a vertical dial on one side and a sunrise/sunset calculator on the other. The vertical dial features hour arcs that are intersected by radial lines marking the beginning of each zodiacal sign. The calculator has two rotatable discs set on top of the main disc. Attached to the lower rotatable disc is an arm that extends across the whole of the main disc and has a suspension ring attached by a swivel joint. It also carries the hinged gnomon for the vertical dial. Within the arm, a square has been cut out leaving a small pointer that moves over the date scale. There are five further pointers on this disc for the length of day, sunrise, the place of the sun, the length of the night and for sunset. The upper rotatable disc is marked with the days of the week and is inscribed 'Hebdomadarium Calendarium' (Week calendar). The equinoxes are marked at 22 March and 24 September on the main disc and the dial is signed 'MF Poppel'.

This instrument was made for use in a latitude consistent with Southern Germany, where Poppel worked. The style of the hour arcs is like that of AST0442, and the use of the full circle of the dial for the engraving of the hour arcs allows a greater accuracy in reading the time, compared with the other vertical plate dials.
