Print after a medal by Lewis Pingo, commemorating Captain James Cook (1728-1779), and issued by the issued by the Royal Society in 1784 in memory of Cook. The obverse of the medal bears a portrait bust of Captain Cook with the legend 'IAC . COOK OCEANI INVESTIGATOR ACERRIMVS'. (The most intrepid investigator of the seas) and 'REG . SOC . LOND . SOCIO . SVO.' in exergue. The reverse shows Fortune as a standing draped female figure and the legend 'NIL INTENTATVM NOSTRI LIQVERE' (Our men have left nothing unattempted) and 'AVSPICIIS GEORGII III' in exergue.
