The south side of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
Looking south-by-west from the top of the 250 ton hammerhead crane on the Promontory showing the south side of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard. Two unidentified Mark 4 tank landing craft are dried out in No. 13 Dry Dock on the left. They are both fitted with Mulock type heavy tank ramp extensions. Alongside the wall between Nos. 13 and 14 Dry Docks are the two halves of the hulked destroyer Porcupine (1941) , pendant G93, with the Mark 5 tank landing craft LCT 2042 (1942) outboard. She has camouflage netting over her tank deck which has been raised amidships. There are two Mark 3 tank landing craft dried out in No. 14 Dry Dock and two Mark 4 tank landing craft dried out in No. 15 Dry Dock on the right. Two fuel oil pontoons are outside No. 15 Dry Dock. Fort Blockhouse and the Portsmouth Harbour entrance is to the right of centre with the Solent and the Isle of Wight beyond. Resident photographer Robert William Wheeler took the photograph using a 5" x 4" press plate camera, assisted by Mr Fred E Wooden.
