The central part of the west side of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire

Looking west-south-west from the top of the 250 ton hammerhead crane on the Promontory showing the central part of the west side of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard. Berthed alongside the end of A Lock is the Mark 2 tank landing ship LST 322 (1942) of the 3rd LST Flotilla with her bow doors open. Outboard of the LST is the landing craft gun (large) LCG(L) 1062 (1943), formerly a Mark 4 tank landing craft now fitted with two ex-destroyer 4.7 inch guns for shore bombardment. In B Lock is the destroyer Jervis (1938). The old battleship Centurion (1911) is in C Lock being prepared for use as a blockship (corncob). Just visible on the right in D Lock is the light cruiser Achilles (1932). A 2-funneled paddle tug is in the Tidal Basin by A Lock. Alongside the South West Wall in the Tidal Basin is the frigate Trollope (1943), pendant K575, with the frigate Lawford (1943) inboard of her. Berthed on North Corner Jetty is the repair ship Artifex (1924) and beyond her in the harbour is the Mark 2 tank landing ship LST 427 (1942) of the 3rd LST Flotilla. In the right background is the light cruiser Scylla (1940). A number of landing craft and a destroyer are in No. 2 Basin. Gosport is in the background. Resident photographer Robert William Wheeler took the photograph using a 5" x 4" press plate camera, assisted by Mr Fred E Wooden.
