The north-west corner of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire.
Looking north-west from the top of the 250 ton hammerhead crane on the Promontory showing the north-west corner of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard. Berthed in a trot on the west side of the basin are four Mark 4 tank landing craft of the 32nd LCT Flotilla with LCT 784 (1943) outboard, then LCT 665 (1943), LCT 685 (1943) and LCT 853 (1943) which has camouflage netting rigged over her tank deck. The Isles class trawler Gairsay (1942), pendant T290, is on the north side of the basin with the minesweeper BYMS 253 (1943) berthed outboard of the auxiliary netlayer Atalanta (1906). A large floating crane is on the right. The old monitor Marshal Soult (1915) is alongside the north wall in the corner of the basin serving as a base ship for auxiliary patrol vessels. Alongside the west wall in the corner of the basin is the former central battery ship Sultan (1870), relegated to use as a training hulk. A large number of motor minesweepers, armed trawlers and whalers of the auxiliary patrol service are berthed on North Wall and the innermost vessel at the west end of North Wall is the former sloop Lupin (1916) in use as an accommodation ship for riggers. Berthed on North West Wall are a River class frigate and a Captain class frigate. Various landing craft are at moorings and at the mouth of Portchester Creek are the former training ships Implacable (1800) and Foudroyant (1817). Resident photographer Robert William Wheeler took the photograph using a 5" x 4" press plate camera, assisted by Mr Fred E Wooden.
