The north-east corner of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
Looking north-north-east from the top of the 250 ton hammerhead crane on the Promontory showing the north-east corner of No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard. The bow of the armed merchant cruiser Ranpura (1924) is on the left. Alongside the east wall of the basin are the submarines Tireless (1943) and Token (1943) which were floated out of No. 13 Dry Dock on 19 Mar. 1943 and were completed in 1945. Outboard of these two is the French submarine Orion (1931) which was cannabalized to keep her sister boats Minerve and Junon in service. The collier Yewdale (1929) is discharging on North Wall, having arrived from Blyth 22 May. She sailed for Barry 29 May 1944. A floating power station is alongside the floating dock AFD 11 (1924). The Round Tower has a bofors gun on the top. Fountain Lake and Rudmore are in the background. Resident photographer Robert William Wheeler took the photograph using a 5" x 4" press plate camera, assisted by Mr Fred E Wooden.
