The south-west corner of No. 2 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
Looking south-west from the gantry of the travelling crane on the south side of the Tidal Basin showing the south-west corner of No. 2 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard. Bath House No. 7 and M.G. House No. 19A are in the foreground with No. 11 Dry Dock beyond and its caisson is open. Berthed on the east side of the basin is the destroyer Escapade (1934) undergoing lengthy repairs and she has the frigate Stayner (1943), pendant K573, berthed outboard. The Mark 3 tank landing craft LCT 456 (1943), which is fitted with Sherman tank ramp extensions, is manoeuvring off the starboard quarter of the Stayner (1943). Alongside the south side of the basin is a pair of Mark 4 tank landing craft, the outboard one being LCT 1015 (1943), both having camouflage netting rigged over their tank decks. On the west side is the bow of the Mark 2 tank landing ship LST 320 (1942) of the 1st LST Flotilla. The Semaphore Tower and the masts of the Victory (1765) can be seen in the background. The photograph was taken by Portsmouth Dockyard's resident photographer Robert William Wheeler using a 5" x 4" press plate camera.
