The north-west side of No. 2 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
Looking west from the gantry of the travelling crane on the south side of the Tidal Basin showing the north-west side of No. 2 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard. The entrance to the basin from the Tidal Basin is in the foreground. A trot of three Mark 4 tank landing craft, two of which are using camouflage netting, is on the left. In the centre is a trot of three Mark 4 tank landing craft, LCT 981 (1943) is nearest with LCT 942 (1943) in the middle and LCT 860 (1943) furthest away. They are all using camouflage netting and have the same ramp extensions. Almost completely hidden behind the LCTs is the submarine P 556 (1922) laid up in Care and Maintenance, a former United States Navy boat allocated to the Royal Navy on Lend/lease. The armed trawler Milford Duchess (1919) with MD on the funnel is beyond the submarine. Boiler Road, No. 2 Ship Shop, No. 3 Smithery and No. 5 Slip can be seen in the background. The photograph was taken by Portsmouth Dockyard's resident photographer Robert William Wheeler using a 5" x 4" press plate camera.
