The South West Wall and North Corner Jetty in the Tidal Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
Looking west-north-west from the gantry of the travelling crane on the south side of the Tidal Basin showing the South West Wall and North Corner Jetty, Portsmouth Dockyard. The entrance to the basin from the Tidal Basin is in the left foreground. In the corner of No. 2 Basin on the left is the Mark 4 tank landing craft LCT 981 (1943). On South West Wall is a coal-burning steam tug discharging ash into a barge alongside. She is one of the five Impetus class built in 1940 and 1942 (Driver, Energy, Flamer, Handmaid and Impetus). Berthed on the South West Wall ahead of the tug is the frigate Lawford (1943), outboard of her is the frigate Trollope (1943), the Mark 2 tank landing ship LST 302 (1942) and the paddle tug Grappler (1908). Berthed on North Corner Jetty is the heavy repair ship Artifex (1924) making smoke. At the mouth of Portchester Creek are the former training ships Implacable (1800) and Foudroyant (1817) with a barrage balloon in the sky above them. The photograph was taken by Portsmouth Dockyard's resident photographer Robert William Wheeler using a 5" x 4" press plate camera.
