Lieutenant William Rivers (1788-1856)
Print. The uniform cap and sitter's apparent age suggests the 1820s date of this portrait of Rivers, who had lost his left leg at Trafalgar before he was 20, was only made lieutenant in 1806, continued afloat to 1818, and from 1826 to his death was on the staff of Greenwich Hospital, latterly as Adjutant. This item is recorded as an unspecified reproduction (lithograph?) but this remains to be checked. For Thomas Milnes's later memorial bust of Rivers, subscribed by his many friends on the staff of Greenwich Hospital, see SCU0046.
