Admiral Lord Bridport

Hand-coloured. A three-quarter-length portrait of Alexander Hood (1726–1814) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, with the ribbon (mostly hidden under his coat) and star of the Order of the Bath and the Glorious First of June gold chain, extending his right arm in a pointing gesture. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Lord Bridport’, and the name of the engraver, ‘W. Greatbach sculpt.’ This portrait was engraved by William Greatbach after Lemuel Francis Abbott’s oil painting of around 1795, now in the Yale Centre for British Art. The print was published by Richard Bentley in 1836. (Updated May 2019.)
Technique includes engraving in the crayon manner and stipple engraving.
