The Battle of the Nile (caricature)
This hand-coloured print is from ‘Greenwich Hospital, A series of Naval Sketches, Descriptive of the Life of a Man-of-War’s Man. By an Old Sailor’, an account of the nautical tales of Matthew Henry Barker, published by James Robins in 1826 and illustrated by George Cruikshank. The print illustrates the chapter titled ‘Quidam Association’, in which a group of wounded Royal Navy veterans recount their memories of the Battle of the Nile at a pub called ‘The Jolly Sailor’. This print shows an old man with a wooden prosthetic leg on top of a table with his cane in one hand and his hat in the other. Around the table other drunken sailors, many with absent limbs and body parts, cheer and throw their hats in the air. The table is strewn with glasses, some knocked over in the excitement, and a large punch bowl. The landlord of the pub wears a red coat and is captivated by the sailor’s cheers. Inscribed beneath with the title and publication information: ‘G Cruikshank / London Pub. July 1st 1825 by J Robins & Co Ivy Lane’.
Cruikshank depicts Royal Navy veterans as old, disabled, and drunk, yet still deeply patriotic, creating a scene in which the viewer can celebrate the sailors’ patriotism while still laughing at their behaviour. The caricature of the jolly drunken sailor obscured the harsh realities that naval veterans often faced, including poverty, long-term health issues, and homelessness.
