Midshipman Blockhead, Mr B Promoted to Lieut & first putting on his uniform (caricature)

Plate 7of 8 (with two additional plates):
Now maybe ten years on, at the end of the story, Master Blockhead has been promoted to Lieutenant and returned to his family home. We find him admiring his reflection in a full length mirror while his family looks on with pride. An older man (perhaps his mother’s suitor from the first plate) is seated by the mirror; beside him is an older daughter, then his mother with a younger daughter beside. A young child stands at Master B’s feet wearing his hat and carrying his sword, while a dandy looks on from the other side of the mirror. The servants also look delighted at the return of Master B. This room is well furnished with good carpet and curtains, which may indicate that money from Master B’s wages has financed the family or, more generally, that his part in defeating the French (depicted in the painting behind the group) has brought prosperity to the nation.

Inscribed below, a line from Twelfth Night:
‘Some are born great, some achieve greatness’
