A view of the ice floes and loose pack ice, taken looking at the sun.

A slightly dark view of ice floes with loose pack ice in between, taken from the bridge of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975). The photograph was taken looking at the sun, creating dark ice with the sun shining brightly down in a line towards the camera. It has highlighted the ripples of the ship moving through the ice.

On 25 July the ice breaker sailed though the Beaufort Sea, passing pack ice. Ivy Sharp spent time watching the ice: 'For the first time since I started this voyage the sun is shining. The cloudless sky and small ice packs make it a dazzling sight so I am now going up to the bridge to see what's what: the time is 645am.'
