The replacement grave marker for William Braine (d.1846) on the foreshore of Beechey Island, Barrow Strait.
A close-up of the replacement wooden grave marker for William Braine, who died on 3 April 1846 and was buried on Beechey Island. Braine was a Private, Royal Marine, on HMS Erebus, one of the exploration ships of the 1845 Northwest Passage Expedition under the command of Sir John Franklin.
The maker has a brass plaque screwed to it that states: 'Sacred to / the memory of / William Braine, R.M. / H.M.S. Erebus / Died April 3d, 1846 / Aged 32 years. / Choose ye this day whom ye / will serve. / Joshua, Ch. XXIV., 15 / This marker is a replica. / The original is housed at the / Prince of Wales / Northern Heritage Centre, / Yellowknife, N.W.T. / 1993'
