A close-up of the replacement wooden grave marker for John Hartnell, who died on 4 January 1846 and was buried on Beechey Island. Hartnell was an Able Seaman on HMS Erebus, one of the exploration ships of the 1845 Northwest Passage Expedition under the command of Sir John Franklin. A slightly unsharp photograph.
The maker has a brass plaque screwed to it that states: 'Sacred / to the memory of / John Hartnell A.B. / of H.M.S. Erebus / Died January 4th 1846 / Aged 25 years. / Thus saith the Lord of Hostes / Consider your ways / Haggai I, 7 / This marker is a replica. / The original is housed at the / Prince of Wales / Northern Heritage Centre, / Yellowknife, N.W.T. / 1993'
