The remains of Northumberland House, errected in 1852-53, on Beechey Island, Barrow Strait.
The bleached wooden remains of Northumberland House, erected on Beechey Island by the crew of HMS North Star in 1852-53. Only one section of wall is still standing but the stone base and footings are in place. In the far distance is the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) with the cliffs of Devon Island behind. The 'house' was constructed to act as a supply depot and shelter for any surviving crew from the 1845 Northwest Passage Expedition.
