On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The photographer is on the starboard bridge wing at 02 deck level looking forward and to starboard showing the Royal Navy Chief Boatswains Mate, known as The Buffer, standing by the bridge screen. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. The United States guided missile frigate Dewey (1958), seen from fine off her port quarter, is pulling ahead of the Ricketts.
