Shipping at anchor off the north coast of Venezuela

A slightly distant view of merchant steam and sailing ships at anchor off the north coast of Venezuela, taken from seaward, but the precise location is unknown. There is a narrow strip of developed land between the sea and a steep sided mountain. A quay wall and some warehouses are on the coastal strip and a few properties have been built on the side of the mountain. The negative is captioned Caracus (sic) but the city of Caracas is inland of a mountain and has no access to the sea. The nearest merchant ship, seen from just ahead of her port beam, is the passenger/cargo steamship Maracaibo (1899) which has a flush deck, rounded counter stern, two masts and a single raked funnel.
