The photographer is looking north-by-west along the Rio di Palazzo showing a gondola in midstream having passed under the Ponte dei Sospiri, also known as the Bridge of Sighs. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone, has windows with stone bars and connects the New Prison (Prigioni Nuove) to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace which is on the left. A vertical format negative.
