HMS 'Indefatigable' exploding at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916
Inscribed by the artist 'Indefatigable', lower left. At the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 the 'Indefatigable' was hit by successive salvos of 11-inch shells from the German battle-cruiser 'Von der Tann' at 16.02-16.03 and blew up with the loss of 1017 officers and men. There were only two survivors. Whether this atmospheric drawing is based on eyewitness accounts or a photograph remains to be determined.
