HMS Princess Royal, HMS Queen Mary and HMS Lion anchored in the Solent with other warships in the distance

A landscape format photographic print of the battlecruisers of the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron (l-r) HMS Princess Royal (1911), HMS Queen Mary (1913) and HMS Lion (1910) anchored in the Solent prior to the declaration of war on 6 August against Germany. HMS Lion is flying the flag of Rear Admiral David Beatty from the foremast. Other warships can be seen in the distance behind HMS Princess Royal.

Gerald Fortescue Longhurst joined HMS Lion on 3 January 1914 as a lieutenant (Gunnery) and was discharged on 20 September 1917. During this time he had been promoted Commander on 30 June 1916 for services at the battle of Jutland.
