A notebook containing drawings made by E. Pearce while serving in the light cruiser HMS ENTERPRISE (1919).
Pearce’s ink and coloured pencil sketches follow the adventures of an ordinary seaman (probably a reflection of his own experiences) on board and ashore. They cover everything from training to shipboard routine and on shore drunkenness, and reveal the artist’s eye for the absurdities and humour of naval life and his healthy cynicism about authority and command.
The creator is likely to be Ernest Pearce, born in Hoxton, London, in 1903. He served as a stoker and then acting leading stoker on the ENTERPRISE between 15 October 1931 and 16 June 1934. He died in the sinking of the light cruiser HMS NAIAD (1939) on 11 March 1942. See the service record numbered ADM 363/212/131 at The National Archives.
