Apprentice Horace Hayward sawing wood for fuel on board the Bank Line cargo vessel Tymeric (1919) at sea in the Indian Ocean. He is on the starboard side of the deck by number three hatch. While on voyage from Newcastle, New South Wales, the ship ran into severe weather and ran short of coal and the crew had to cut timber baulks and shifting boards into four feet lengths for use in the furnaces. The photographer, also an apprentice on board, is looking aft.
