An informal portrait of Captain Lawrence Oates standing outside the temporary structure attached to the hut at Cape Evans that housed the ponies. Oates has a shovel in his right hand and is resting his left on a bale of fodder.
Oates was charged with looking after the ponies and Herbert Ponting remarked on Oates' devotion to the animals as he "would pass hour on end in the frigid temperatures of the stable".
