A middle-distant starboard side view of the exploration ship Discovery (1901) in loose pack ice. The sails are set except for the fore and main course sails, which are loosely furled, and the driver on the mizzen. A group of men are on the ice floe off the starboard side, possibly collecting ice.

Photograph was taken during the ship's five day journey through a 270-mile belt of pack ice.

The slide is cracked.
