A smith and a hammerman forging a large square billet using an heavy duty B & S Massey steam hammer in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is using a pair of tongs to hold the red-hot billet on the hammer base. The hammerman, wearing white overalls, is at the control lever of the steam hammer. The hammer's drophead has hit the billet, creating a small shower of sparks. The photographer is standing in front of the hammer.
