Submarine cable
Cross section of submarine cable. Atlantic Cable 1858. The core of seven copper wires coated with four layers of gutta percha alternating with four layers of Chatterton's compound covered with a cushion of tarred jute. The outer sheathing consists of twelve iron wires covered by tarred hemp and compound.
