The Royal Naval Exhibition at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London in 1891
The Royal Naval Exhibition at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, ran from 2 May to 24 October 1891. This is inside Section V of the Armstrong Gallery and shows a detailed drawing of a target that had been set up at Shoeburyness after it had been struck by a shell fired by an Elswick 110-ton breech loading gun from the battleship Sans Pareil (1887) in March 1891. The shell drove through five layers comprising 20 inches of compound armour, 8 inches of iron, 20 feet of oak, 5 feet of granite and 11 feet of concrete before embedding itself 6 feet into brick; a total penetration of 44 feet 4 inches. A copy negative produced by the NMM Studio of a mounted photographic print contained in Photograph Album No. ALB1386.
