The Royal Naval Exhibition at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London in 1891

The Royal Naval Exhibition at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, ran from 2 May to 24 October 1891. This is inside Section V of the Armstrong Gallery and shows a detailed drawing of a target that had been set up at Shoeburyness after it had been struck by a shell fired by an Elswick 110-ton breech loading gun from the battleship Sans Pareil (1887) in March 1891. The photograph shows the entry point of the shell and its path through 20 inches of compound armour, 8 inches of iron, and into 20 feet of oak. The shell continued through 5 feet of granite and 11 feet of concrete before embedding itself 6 feet into brick; a total penetration of 44 feet 4 inches. A copy negative produced by the NMM Studio of a mounted photographic print contained in Photograph Album No. ALB1386.
