A close detail of the small piece of bitumastic paint removed from No. 5 torpedo tube bow cap mechanical indicator drain tap of the submarine Thetis (1938). The paint chip is laid on a piece of ruled paper with a ruler standing beside it to show the size of the chip. It was this small chip of paint that was determined to be the cause of the disaster that cost 100 lives in total. A copy negative produced by the NMM studio of an Admiralty photographic print. The original print was made by Stewart Bale (Negative number 39692-8)
