A flower box of Nelson's time on board the Victory (1765) at Portsmouth.
A lead-lined wooden box laying on its side on the lower deck of the former ship-of-the-line Victory (1765) in Portsmouth Dockyard. In the Portsmouth Dockyard negative register the box is described as a "flower box of Nelson's time". It is propped up on two cannon balls and the photographer is looking at the bottom of the box. It is rectangular with a clawed foot in each corner and each foot is fitted with a small castor. It has carrying handles at each end and each handle is a metal ring held in the mouth of a maned lion's head. There are signs of woodworm infestation in the bottom timbers.
